A homework folder sketched for my Capstone class at the University of Washington. The brief was to design a product that would physically limit the amount of homework assigned to elementary school students each night.

One thought I had was to provide origami patterns on the back of each assignment, to be done in class the next day. That way, teachers could connect homework to a reward to the students and it would incentivize the use of smaller sheets of paper.

An iteration of the idea that would instead provide a very discrete amount of space where the homework could be kept, limiting the amount of homework that could be assigned. This would also save students from having to buy giant binders to keep homework.

Paper is designed for adults, not kids, and a huge blank sheet of paper can look daunting to kids. Especially if there are 10-20 pages assigned! One, small square page will eliminate the intimidation and save students time.

This was my final solution to the brief; it provides a discrete space for homework to limit the size of the assignments. It also ensures that students have a pencil and a flat workspace.

A collection of design renderings from the course of my time at the University of Washington, focused on a specific brief. I created these with 3D renderings from Fusion 360 and oversketch in Photoshop to convey details, colorways, and functionality. This is a valuable tool in my iteration process, as the same rough 3D model can be used multiple times for many design iterations. The models are also easily rotated and re-rendered to sketch other viewpoints on the same object, saving a lot of time. I'm happy to have this tool in my arsenal to apply to any design brief.
